Help Ban Styrofoam Takeout Containers E-mail
Tuesday, 26 January 2010 15:29

If you have ever taken a walk on the beach, you have seen these little white bits rolling away on the sand, floating on the surface of the water, or being swallowed by sea birds who mistake them for food. These little bits are Styrofoam bits and are one of the greatest environmental offenders human beings have ever invented. They break off of to-go containers used by thousands of restaurants and eateries, and fly away in the wind thanks to their incredibly light weight. They are very hard to recycle, and do not biodegrade.

What You Can Do To Take Action

Some cities in California and some other states have put a ban on Styrofoam takeout containers. Their use is all the more unjustified as there are environmentally safe, biodegradable alternatives. California is taking action to advance a statewide ban on Styrofoam takeout containers. If it succeeds, it will be the first state to ban Styrofoam takeout containers. Naturally, the bill is being attacked by chemical industry lobbyists, so if you care about this issue, and about the state of our oceans, hop onto the ban wagon and contact Assembly Speaker Perez to ask him to advance the ban. Use this pre-written form to make your voice known.

As Environment California, a statewide, citizen-based environmental advocacy organization, puts it: "Nothing we use for 5 minutes should be polluting the ocean for 500 years"
