A small handful of car rental companies are making it a bit easier to lessen the environmental impact of renting a car.
Vroomvroomvroom.com Not only that does the website vroomvroomvroom.com help users find low rates on rentals, but when you book a car, vroomvroomvroom offsets the rental's carbon emissions at no extra cost by donating to the Carbon Neutral Company, which in turn invests in projects such as wind farms.
Kayak.com Last year, Kayak.com launced a hybrid filter on their car rental search which provides the option of searching for hybrid vehicles only. Kayak also lets users search with a miles per gallon filter too, for those areas with less hybrids.
Enterprise-Rent-A-Car Enterprise is following suite by matching dollar for dollar (up to $1.25 per rental) customer donations to carbon offset projects. Enterprise also just launched its WeCar vehicle sharing program. The national program is based on a similar concept pioneered by Zipcar (short rentals, web reservations, local pickups/drop off), but makes use of the huge Enterprise fleet and thousands of neighborhood locations. The WeCar fleet is populated by hybrids and other fuel-efficient vehicles, but there's a catch; your employer or school must be a member of the program before you can make a reservation. For more information about WeCar, please visit www.wecar.com.
