Playing is a very important part of a child’s day. Just like with sleep and food, we adults need to make sure that what we give our kids or our friend’s kids is safe and healthy. We need to ensure that they have access to lead-, mercury-, arsenic- and other chemical-free toys. A daunting task sometimes, but there are many tools that we can use to help us.
HealthyToys.org is one of them. In December 2008, they released their second annual consumer guide to toxic chemicals in toys, testing over 1,500 new toys. Use their search box to find out if a toy you own or are about to purchase contains dangerous chemicals or not. GoodGuide, another helpful guide, will help you find safe dolls, puzzles, arts and crafts, action figures and much more with a click of the mouse. Healthy Child Healthy World goes even further with their very helpful, eco-conscious and sensible Quick Tips which remind us that we may not need to buy toys (sometimes a tin box from the kitchen will work just as well) and also that many factors should play in our decision (is the toy packaged too heavily? will it last for several generations?) if we want to be responsible consumers.
