Unclogging Drains: A Green Alternative E-mail
Monday, 02 March 2009 13:18

Clogged up drains can be a nightmare, but need not be a financial hole. Learn how you can be your own plumber, save money and stop using harsh unclogging products.

When your sink or bathtub clogs up, you probably first try to unclog it using a good old plunger. Seeing it doesn’t work, you go to the store and buy some (very environmentally unfriendly) products to eat away the grime. If that doesn’t work, you call the plumber. He plunges a long, thin “snake” down the drain, a metal cable with a corkscrew auger at one end and a crank at the other end, and $40 some dollars later, your sink is unclogged. The problem with this scenario is that first, you spend money on some product, second the product pollutes the environment, and third, you spend money again when the plumber comes to fix your drain. A less expensive, greener solution is to buy the snake yourself and be your own plumber. Home Depot, Lowe’s and other large hardware stores carry snakes for around $30-$40: the price of the plumber’s visit.  Follow the manufacturer’s instructions or visit www.ehow.com.

If money is an issue, consider splitting the costs with friends and family, a neighbor, a member of your church, a parent at your kid’s school etc.
