Paper or Plastic? Take the Canvas Challenge! 100 billion disposable shopping bags are consumed every year in the US. Eco-Friendly Jeans Are Not So OK E-mail
Thursday, 26 February 2009 15:09

Eco-friendly jeans, made of organic, hand-picked cotton are better for the environment than jeans made of conventionally-grown cotton. BUT:

To make eco-friendly jeans, you need:

    - As much as 50% more land to yield the same amount of cotton than conventionally-grown cotton
    - Chemical solvents to create liquid dye, whether the indigo pigments are natural (which it still rarely is) or not
    - If made of bamboo, caustic soda to cook the shoots in order to turn them into fiber
    - If the hardware (zippers, rivets, etc) is not made of recycled scrap metal, brass hardware, itself made of copper and zinc, two minerals whose extraction and processing includes air pollution

Your eco-jeans may not be so OK for the environment…
