Green Challenge

Paper or Plastic? Take the Canvas Challenge! 100 billion disposable shopping bags are consumed every year in the US. This is 200,000 bags per minute, or about 60 plastic bags in only four trips to the grocery store for the average family. And of all those plastic bags, only 1% is recycled, while the remaining 99% pollute the environment, and harm wildlife when animals mistake them for food.

Did You Know?

A locavore is a new, friendly species that strives to eat (hence the suffix –vore, as in herbivore or carnivore) only (or mostly) locally-grown food. Not always easy since, depending on where you live and on the season, you may only have squash and other members of the Cucurbitaceae family to eat for a few months...

A Cell Phone With A Cause E-mail
Wednesday, 16 September 2009 13:29

There is only one cell phone company in the US that can claim to be green: Credo Mobile. True, they offer Blackberries, flip phones  and camera phones just like all the other cell phone companies. But they also offer certified CarbonFree phones, as they are partners with Carbonfund.org, as well as solar-powered phone chargers, and refurbished phones.

They also go beyond, and it’s in the small details such as these that they are really green:

- their bills are printed on 100% post-consumer recycled paper, using soy-based ink;
- they donate significant sums of money to environmental groups such as Greenpeace and Rainforest Action Network;
- they plant 100 trees for every ton of paper they use;
- they help recycle phones by providing a prepaid shipping label from CollectiveGood so customers can repurpose their old phones.

Also, they are socially engaged and through their Action Lobby, they regularly put pressure on Congress regarding environmental issues; they boast putting a halt to 58 coal-fired power plants. What’s more, they donate 1% of customer charges (at no cost for the customer) to progressive non-profit companies, such as Doctors Without Borders and Planned Parenthood.

All that good environmental and social stuff being said, consumer reviews are mixed. Some laud their customer service, others complain about the poor reception, still others point out that, since they share the Fiber optic line with Sprint, Credo is just as good as Sprint in terms of network.  Another important fact to consider: they require a two-year contract  for all new plans, but they will buy out your current cell phone contract, up to $200. They have compelling and competitive plans, as you can see here.

If you think that cell phone companies are all the same in the end, you may want to give the more environmentally-responsible one a chance. Just go to credomobile and see for yourself.
