Last month in Barcelona, Samsung announced its latest environmentally friendly phone - the Samsung Blue Earth. Much like its sister, the Samsung Reclaim in the US, the Blue Earth is made from recycled materials, in this case - recycled water bottles. Â
Besides being made available from ecofriendly packaging (made from renewable materials and printed with soy ink) the Samsung Blue Earth comes with some of the features you would expect from a smartphone, like a 3.2 MP camera, a touch screen, music and video players, FM radio, Bluetooth, 3G and a microSDHC slot.
In addition, the Samsung boasts some ecosmart features, most notably the large solar panel on the back of the phone, and a 'eco-walk' function which lets you count the reduction in CO2 emission realized by walking.
The device, including the charger, is also free from harmful substances such as Brominated Flame Retardants (BFR), Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) and Phthalate. The Blue Earth also comes with a 5 star energy efficient charger which uses only 0.03W of power in standby mode. Users can also generate enough power using the solar panel to use the device anytime and anywhere - presuming there is sunlight.
With the announcment of the Blue Earth, Samsung hopes to reinforce its commitment to protecting the environment through the design of eco-friendly products that achieve lower energy consumption and incorporate renewable materials.
