Green Challenge

Paper or Plastic? Take the Canvas Challenge! 100 billion disposable shopping bags are consumed every year in the US. This is 200,000 bags per minute, or about 60 plastic bags in only four trips to the grocery store for the average family. And of all those plastic bags, only 1% is recycled, while the remaining 99% pollute the environment, and harm wildlife when animals mistake them for food.

5 Easy Tips For Greener Grocery Shopping E-mail
Friday, 30 January 2009 12:53

With a few changes here and there, we can all help reduce the amount of waste generated by our mindless grocery shopping habits. Follow these tips and you'll soon be on your way to becoming a greener shopper!

1. Bring your own canvas bags. If you don’t own any yet, you will most likely be able to purchase some at your local supermarket. Better yet, you can purchase 100% organic hemp or cotton canvas totes on line. They are more expensive but they are significantly better for the environment and they also make great gifts!

2. Bring your own produce bags. Plastic produce bags (the ones you grab from the roll to place your tomatoes or leeks) are just as bad as the plastic bags from the check-out bagger. Instead, bring your own produce bags, such as these ACME mesh bags made of organic cotton. They are sturdy, see-through for easy check out, and they are washable. We love ours and highly recommend them!

3. Cut down on heavily packaged items. Think of the amount of plastic, paper and synthetic glue used to package string cheese versus that used to package one big chunk of cheese.

4. Bulk is better. If you have enough storage space, buy in bulk or in larger quantities. For example, instead of going for those six small yogurt jars, grab the big one.

5. Glass versus plastic. At home, store your leftovers in glass containers instead of plastic ones.

Happy greener shopping!
