Green Challenge

Paper or Plastic? Take the Canvas Challenge! 100 billion disposable shopping bags are consumed every year in the US. This is 200,000 bags per minute, or about 60 plastic bags in only four trips to the grocery store for the average family. And of all those plastic bags, only 1% is recycled, while the remaining 99% pollute the environment, and harm wildlife when animals mistake them for food.

4 Cool Eco-Friendly Kitchen Gadgets E-mail
Friday, 11 December 2009 16:41

The kitchen is a pretty important part of the home when it comes to using energy, since most of the appliances in your kitchen use energy. For example, you have your kettle, oven, cooker, fridge, freezer, toaster, food mixers, etc. You're also using a lot of water for washing your dishes, and you probably create a lot of food waste, such as fruit and from vegetable peelings. Well here are a small collection of kitchen gadgets that make your home a little more eco-friendly.

eco kettle

Are you a big fan of coffee or tea? The eco kettle 2 is designed to make it really simple to save energy and water. Using a specially-designed water chamber, you release the exact amount of water you need for your drink into the main kettle compartment to boil it. Since the average person who uses a kettle typically boils twice as much energy compared to what they need, you can save a lot of energy and water very quickly.

indoor composter

I'm a huge fan of fruit and vegetables, but I'm usually left with a considerable amount of peelings and skins as a result. I now have a compost bin, but when I lived in the city, I was living in an apartment. Thankfully, there is now a gadget that allows you to compost your food waste indoors, such as the NatureMill indoor composter. Using heat, airflow and moisture, your food waste is broken down quickly and without any nasty smells. Although the composter does use some electricity, it only uses about 5kWh a month, which will cost you around a dollar or two each month. A great bonus is that the composter reduces methane emissions, due to the aerobic (i.e. complete) decomposition of the food waste.

eco toaster

If you love your toast, you probably have toast most mornings for breakfast. The Morphy Richards Eco Toaster uses 35% less energy compared to other toasts thanks to a specially designed lid that closes automatically when you put your toast in. By preventing the heat being lost through the top of the toaster, you need less energy to cook the toast. A simple idea, but very effective for reducing energy consumption.

removable kitchen sink

Finally, a simple gadget to help you look after your waste washing up water. Once you've done your washing up, you can drain the waste water on to your garden using a removable kitchen sink. The washing up bowl has strong handles which means you can easily lift the bowl outside. When you want to drain the water, just remove the special plug at the bottom of the sink. This means your water gets two uses. If you use eco-friendly dish washing liquid, then no harm will come to your plants either.

I hope you enjoyed this collection of eco-friendly kitchen gadgets. Do you have any green kitchen gadgets you recommend?
