Americans love their air conditioning, more than the Europeans but less than the Japanese. How much does this love cost?
- 65% (2/3) of all US homes have air conditioners vs. 85% in Japan and 5% in Europe (in 2000)
- Air Conditioners use about 5% of all the electricity produced in the United States
- = 100 million tons of carbon dioxide released into the air each year
- = 100 million tons of carbon dioxide released into the air each year
- = about two tons of carbon dioxide for each home with an air conditioner (on average)
